Attendance:

Regular attendance and punctuality are important. After your first two absences, 50 points will be deducted from your class grade for each absence. In addition, 20 points will be deducted for each “tardy” (late arrival or early departure). If you miss more than half of a class, you will be counted absent. If you miss more than a few minutes and less than half of a class, you will be counted tardy.

Late Work:

Except in the case of a true emergency, which may need to be documented, assignments will not be accepted late unless you contact me before the assignment is due and make arrangements for an extension of the deadline. All assignments are due by the end of class on the date indicated in the syllabus or announced in class. If you will not be in class on the day an assignment is due, you must leave the assignment in my box or e-mail it to me by 8:30 a.m. on that day.

Plagiarism:

Plagiarism is presenting another person’s ideas, organizational structure, sentence patterns, and/or words as your own. Any plagiarized assignment will automatically receive zero points and may not be redone.

Class Cancellation:

Class cancellations due to bad weather or instructor’s illness will be posted on the class wiki.

Other:

All gaming, audio-visual, and telecommunications equipment (electronic games, cell phones, pagers, mp3 players, laptops, etc.) must be turned off and put away during class.

S/B – 80-89%
S/C – 70-79%
U/D – 60-69%
U/F – 0-59%

No incompletes will be given. In order to pass ENG 090 and enroll in ENG 121, you must receive a satisfactory grade (i.e., S/A, S/B, or S/C). You may also retake the ACCUPLACER test at any time.

Grades for developmental classes are not included in GPA calculation.
Course Requirements:

In-Class Writing Assignments—During each class, you will complete a writing assignment. These may take the form of journal entries, freewriting and/or clustering exercises, grammar worksheets, group exercises, or peer reviews. These assignments are due during class and will not be accepted late. In addition, they may not be made up in cases of absence or tardiness.

Paragraphs and Essays—All final paragraphs and essays must be submitted in MLA format. A template will be provided. Points will be deducted for failure to complete the following process for each essay: selecting a topic, prewriting, developing a topic sentence or thesis statement, writing a rough draft, and editing the draft. The paragraph or essay and all prewriting work, outline, and drafts must be attached to the cover sheet provided by the instructor, with the final version immediately behind the cover sheet. Failure to follow these instructions may result in points being deducted from the grade for the assignment.

When possible, time will be scheduled during class for students to complete the initial steps in writing their essays so that the instructor may monitor and guide the students in their choice of topic, topic sentence and thesis statement development, outlining, and drafting. (Sexually explicit topics and profanity are not acceptable.) All the paragraphs and essays for this class should be based on the students’ own knowledge and experience. No research is necessary.

Required Materials:

You must bring all of the following items to every class:

Standard size notebook paper (approximately 8.5 by 11”) for taking notes and completing writing assignments in class
Blue or black pen (and pencils, if desired)
Green or red pen
Highlighter

In addition, you will need a flash drive or other means to store electronic copies of your essays.

Course Description:

ENG 090 emphasizes critical thinking as you explore writing for specific purposes and audiences. The course enables you to develop skills required for college-level writing while reviewing paragraph structure and focusing on essay development.

Prerequisite:

ENG 060 or appropriate ACCUPLACER score
